Alright, so I had this little get-together planned at my place, nothing too fancy, but I still wanted the space to feel a bit more festive, you know? I was looking around, thinking about decorations, and honestly, a lot of that stuff can get pretty expensive, or it’s just a hassle to put up and then take down.
Getting Started with Streamers
Then it kinda hit me – good old streamers! I remembered them from when I was a kid. Super cheap, and they always make a place look instantly more cheerful. So, I went and grabbed a few rolls of crepe-paper streamers. I got a couple of different colors, just to mix it up a bit.
First thing I did was tackle the buffet table. I figured a stunning pop of colour right across the center would look great. I just took a long piece of streamer and, using some of those sticky glue dots, I stuck one end under the edge of the table cover. Then I sort of draped it across to the other side and stuck it down there too. I did a couple of rows like this, some straight, some a bit wavy. It looked pretty neat, actually. Double-sided tape would have worked just as well, I reckon.
I also had this ceiling fan in the living room that looked a bit plain. So, I thought, why not? I cut a few shorter lengths of streamers and carefully taped them to the blades of the fan. Important note: I made sure they weren’t too long, so they wouldn’t get tangled or hit anything when the fan was on low. It added a nice little swirl of color when the fan was going.
Adding in Some Flags
Streamers were looking good, but I felt like I needed something else. That’s when I decided to add some simple flags, or like, little pennants. I didn’t want to go out and buy a pre-made bunting because, again, trying to keep it simple and affordable.
So, I found some old colored paper I had lying around. Nothing fancy, just regular craft paper.
- I folded a few sheets in half.
- Then I cut out simple triangle shapes, making sure the folded edge was one of the short sides of the triangle.
- This way, when I unfolded it, I had a diamond shape that could fold over a string.
I grabbed a long piece of string, laid it out, and then one by one, I folded my paper triangles over the string and just used a bit of regular clear tape on the inside to stick the two halves of the triangle together, securing it to the string. I spaced them out a bit, maybe a hand’s width apart.
I made a couple of these flag strings. One I hung up over the doorway, just taping the ends of the string to the doorframe. Another one I strung along the mantelpiece. It was super easy, and honestly, took hardly any time at all.
The Final Look
Once I had both the streamers and the flags up, the whole room just felt different. That big visual impact they talk about? Totally true, even with just basic crepe paper and some cut-up paper. The streamers added these flowing lines of color, and the flags gave it a bit more of a classic party vibe.
I even had a few streamers left, so I just twisted them and draped them over the back of a couple of chairs. I could totally see using this idea for porchscaping too, if the weather was nice. It’s just a really simple, effective way to brighten things up without much fuss or money. And cleaning up is a breeze too, which is always a bonus!
