First off, what even is GRCC Baseball? Well, it’s basically the baseball program at Grand Rapids Community College. I stumbled on their website looking for something completely unrelated, and saw they had a schedule of games. Being a bit of a baseball nut, I figured, why not?
So, I started by grabbing their schedule. It was a pretty standard format – dates, times, opponents, locations. But it was all in a jumbled mess on their site. I spent a good hour copy-pasting all that info into a spreadsheet. Yeah, I know, super high-tech.
Then came the fun part. I wanted to build a little tracker to see how they were doing over the season. Nothing fancy, just wins, losses, maybe some basic stats. I’m a sucker for a good spreadsheet, so I started playing around with some formulas. I figured out how to automatically calculate their win percentage and all that jazz. It was kinda cool actually.
Next up, I actually went to a game! It was a surprisingly good time. GRCC was playing against some other community college. The weather was decent, the hot dogs were cheap, and the baseball was… well, it was baseball. Not MLB quality, but still entertaining. I even kept score in a little notebook, old school style. Felt like a real baseball scout.
After the game, I added my notes to the spreadsheet. It was starting to look pretty decent! I even added a column for “Notes” where I could jot down any interesting observations – who had a good game, any clutch plays, stuff like that.
But here’s where things got a little more interesting. I decided to try to find some stats online. GRCC’s website didn’t have much beyond the basic schedule. So, I started digging around on other community college sports sites. It was a bit of a rabbit hole, but I actually managed to find some game results and individual player stats for a couple of the games.
I plugged those stats into my spreadsheet too. Now it was really starting to feel like a legit baseball database! Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But it was fun!
Eventually, I started to lose steam. Tracking community college baseball stats is, surprisingly, not the most thrilling hobby in the world. But I did learn a few things:

Would I do it again? Probably not with the same level of detail. But it was a good little project to keep my brain busy for a bit. And hey, maybe I’ll catch another GRCC baseball game sometime. You never know!
