Why get a baseball wedding ring? It is a great choice for couples who love the game!

So, I had this idea kicking around in my head for a while: a wedding ring, but made with a baseball. Sounds a bit nuts, right? But my buddy, huge baseball fan, getting hitched. I thought, what could be more unique? Plus, I like tinkering with stuff, making things with my hands. Figured it’d be a cool project.

Getting Started – The Raw Materials

First things first, I needed a baseball. Not just any baseball, mind you. I wanted one that looked like it had seen a few games, had some character. Dug through my old stuff and found a perfectly scuffed-up one. Then, the ring part. I got myself one of those stainless steel ring cores, the kind you can inlay stuff into. Seemed sturdy enough. And of course, a whole bunch of super glue, some sharp blades, sandpaper – the usual suspects for a DIY mess.

The Messy Part – Taking it Apart

Okay, so taking a baseball apart isn’t as clean as you’d think. I carefully started cutting the stitches. Man, those stitches are tough! My fingers were sore pretty quick. Once I got through them, I peeled off the leather. It’s two pieces, shaped like a figure eight. The inside was all this yarn and a little rubber core. Kind of interesting, actually. I just needed the leather, though.

The leather itself was pretty thick. I knew I had to thin it down somehow if it was going to fit into the ring channel. This was probably the part I was dreading the most. I tried a few things, mostly carefully scraping the back of the leather. It was slow going. Bits of leather fuzz everywhere. My workbench looked like a disaster zone for a few days.

Fitting it to the Ring – The Real Challenge

Next up, cutting the leather to the right size for the ring inlay. I measured the channel in the steel core, then carefully cut a strip from the flattest part of the baseball leather. I wanted to try and get some of the red stitching in there, ’cause that’s the iconic part, right?

  • Getting the leather strip perfectly straight was a pain.
  • Then, pressing it into the channel without it bunching up? Even bigger pain.
  • I used a ton of glue. Like, a lot of glue. Clamped it down and hoped for the best.

The first attempt, not gonna lie, looked a bit rough. The leather wasn’t perfectly flush. I had some gaps. So, I ripped it out (carefully!) and tried again. This time, I spent more time thinning the leather strip and being super patient with the glue and placement. I also tried to be strategic about where the original stitch holes from the baseball would lie. I wanted to see a bit of that red thread if possible, or at least the holes where it used to be.

Finishing Touches

Once the leather was finally in there and the glue was super dry, it was time for sanding. I started with a coarser grit sandpaper to get the leather flush with the metal edges of the ring, then moved to finer and finer grits to make it smooth. You gotta be careful here not to scuff up the metal part too much, though I did have to polish that up later anyway.

After all the sanding, the leather looked pretty good, but a bit dry. I used a clear sealant, a few coats, to protect the leather and give it a bit of a shine. Make it more durable, you know? Can’t have it falling apart on his finger.

The Final Product

And that was pretty much it. It took way longer than I thought it would, and there were definitely moments where I thought I’d messed it up beyond repair. But holding the finished ring, it actually looked pretty cool. The scuffed leather, the hint of where the red stitches were – it had character. It wasn’t perfect, like something machine-made, but that was the point. It was made by hand, from a real baseball. My buddy loved it, which is all that matters, I guess. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind thing.

So yeah, that’s how I made a baseball wedding ring. A bit of patience, a lot of glue, and not being afraid to mess up and start over. Definitely a fun project, even with all the fiddly bits.
