So, I found myself looking up the Whitworth baseball roster the other day. Don’t ask me why, sometimes these things just pop into your head, right? Maybe I was feeling a bit nostalgic for college days, though I never played at that level, not even close.
Anyway, I hopped on the computer. Typed it in. You know how it goes. Pretty quickly, I was on what looked like their official athletics site. No big mystery there, thankfully. Sometimes finding these things can be a real pain, websites buried under other websites.
First thing I usually do is just scan the names. See the positions. You got your pitchers, catchers, infield, outfield. The whole shebang. It’s a decent sized list. Makes you realize how many folks are involved in a college team. It’s not just the nine guys on the field.
I started clicking around a bit, if they had little bios or hometowns listed. It’s always interesting to me where these players come from. Some from right there in Spokane, others from further out. You wonder about their journey to get there. All that practice, all those games in high school.
It’s not like I was doing deep research, you know?
More just a casual browse. I remember when my nephew was looking at colleges, we’d pull up rosters for all sorts of sports. He was a soccer guy, but the idea is the same. You try to get a feel for the program, the kind of student-athletes they have.
Back when I was younger, much younger, we didn’t have all this info online. You’d maybe see a list in a printed program at a game, if you were lucky. Now, it’s all just a few clicks away. For better or worse, I suppose. Makes you feel connected, but also maybe a bit too much information sometimes?

I noticed the different class years – freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors.
-
Always a mix, the fresh faces and the old hands.
-
Makes you think about the leadership roles the older guys take on.
I spent maybe ten, fifteen minutes just looking through it. Didn’t really have a goal, just curiosity. It’s like looking at an old yearbook sometimes, even if you don’t know the people. Each name represents a whole lot of effort and dreams, I figure.
My Takeaway
At the end of the day, it was just a simple search. But it did get me thinking about college sports and the dedication of these young athletes. The Whitworth Pirates, whoever they are playing, you know those guys on the roster are giving it their all. That’s pretty cool to see, even if it’s just names on a screen for a few minutes. Made me want to catch a game sometime if I’m ever in the area. Just to see the actual faces behind those roster spots.
