Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get around to this for a bit. Playing NBA 2K24, and you know how it is, some things just stick out. For me, lately, it was Coach Popovich. The default face in the game… well, let’s just say it wasn’t doing him any justice. Looked kinda generic, you know? And Pop, he’s got a distinctive look!
So, I decided I had to do something about it. My first step, like always with these things, was to fire up my browser. I just started searching, simple stuff like “NBA 2K24 Popovich cyberface,” “Popovich 2K24 mod,” that kind of thing. You gotta cast a wide net at first.
Found a few forum posts, some discussions on modding sites. It’s always a bit of a treasure hunt with these specific cyberfaces, especially for coaches. Players, yeah, tons of those. Coaches? A bit less common, but people definitely make ’em.
After a bit of clicking around, I landed on a file that looked promising. The screenshots seemed pretty decent, definitely better than what the game shipped with. So, I downloaded the file. It was a typical cyberface file, you know the kind if you’ve messed with 2K mods before. Usually an .iff file or something similar.
Next up was actually getting it into the game. This is where it can get a little tricky if you’re new to it, but I’ve been down this road before. You need to have your modding setup ready. For me, that means having the NBA 2K Hook or a similar tool that lets the game read custom files from a specific folder. I already had my “mods” folder set up from previous tweaks I’d made.
So, I located the downloaded Popovich cyberface file. Then, I navigated to my NBA 2K24 game directory, and into that special “mods” folder. It’s pretty straightforward once you know where things go. I just copied the new cyberface file into that “mods” folder. If there was an existing file with the same name (maybe a placeholder or an older mod), I’d replace it. This time, it was a fresh addition for Pop.
With the file in place, the moment of truth. I launched NBA 2K24. Went into a quick game, picked the Spurs, of course. Waited for the game to load, watching the sidelines during gameplay and especially during timeouts or cutscenes showing the coach.
And there he was! The new Popovich. I gotta say, it was a noticeable improvement. The details were much better, the likeness was closer to the real Gregg Popovich. His classic expression, the whole vibe. It just felt more authentic. It’s a small thing, a coach’s face, but for someone who notices these details, it makes a difference to the immersion.
So yeah, that was my process. A bit of searching, a download, and a quick file placement. The community that makes these mods, they do some great work. It’s cool that we can tweak these little things to make the game experience a bit more tailored. If you’re also bothered by the default Pop, I’d say it’s worth looking around for a good cyberface. It’s not too complicated once you get the hang of where to put the files.
