My Kennedy Martin Basketball Session Today
Alright, so today I decided to hit the court, really focusing on trying to channel some of that Kennedy Martin energy I’ve been seeing. Not sure if you all follow her game, but there’s something about her style I wanted to break down in my own practice.
First thing, I got to the gym. It was kinda empty, which is always a bonus. None of that waiting around for a hoop. I started with my usual warm-ups, you know, some light jogging, stretching out the old limbs. Gotta do that, especially now. Then I moved into some ball-handling drills. Just basic stuff, pounds, crossovers, behind the back – trying to get a feel for the rock.
The Main Grind: Emulating Kennedy Martin
So, the core of today was about trying to work on a couple of things I imagine are big parts of Kennedy Martin’s game. I’m guessing here a bit, but it’s about the idea of her play, right?
- Quick Release Shots: I spent a good chunk of time on my jumper. Really focused on getting the shot off faster. Not rushing it, mind you, but making the whole motion more compact. Catch, dip, release. Over and over. Some went in, a lot clanked. It’s tougher than it looks to be consistent with a quick trigger. My shoulder started to feel it after a while.
- Aggressive Drives: Then I worked on driving to the basket. Trying to be more explosive on that first step. I set up a chair as a defender – classic, I know – and just practiced blowing by it. Left side, right side. I was thinking about how she, or players like her, just attack the paint. It’s a mindset thing too, not just physical.
There was this one moment, I was trying this hesitation move into a drive, and I totally fumbled the ball. Tripped over my own feet practically. Looked like a real amateur out there. Made me laugh, actually. Reminded me of when I first started playing, I couldn’t even dribble and walk at the same time without staring at the ball. My old coach, Coach Miller, he used to say, “Son, the ball ain’t gonna bite ya, look up!” Good old days. He was tough but fair. Wonder what he’s up to now.
What I Realized
So after about an hour and a half, I was pretty gassed. Wrapped it up with some free throws, always gotta end on free throws. My big takeaway from trying to play like Kennedy Martin, or my idea of her, is that it’s all about efficiency and intensity. Every movement seems to have a purpose. Not a lot of wasted motion.
I definitely didn’t nail everything. My shot still needs a ton of work to be that quick and accurate. And those drives? Let’s just say the imaginary defender got the better of me a few times. But it was a good session. Felt like I pushed myself in a different way, focusing on someone else’s supposed strengths to find gaps in my own game.
Guess I’ll keep some of these drills in the rotation. See if I can actually make some progress. It’s all about putting in the work, right? No shortcuts in this game. Or any game, really.
